Greek Trading
The country of Greece had a very strong trade power because there was little farm land so people had to find a different occupation instead of farming so the greek jobs were mainly based off the sea. The greeks gained a ton of money of their trades over time. For example there was a lot of traders and the traders need transportation so sailors would take them to where they wanted to go, kind of like water taxi cabs. The trade on crete with the minoans was very important to the ancient lands because the island of crete was a great place to set up trading posts and the minoans went very far to trade such as egypt and sicily. This spread ideas much like the silk road did. The trading of greece continued for many years until greece hit the dark ages. In the dark ages no one traded and people were focused solely on survival. The greek money system was also very different from romes because the greeks had many governments and more governments means more types of money because each government issued their own type of money. |
Roman Trade
The roman economy was less of a trade power than greece and was not as strong with a navy and sailing to trade. The Roman economy was very rich for the people who had money or very poor for the people that didn't have money. The wealthy people of the town spent a lot of money and often used way more than they should of their share of things. The poor one the other hand were very poor and often went unfed. The way they did not die was because of the free handouts by the government to keep the main body of the city happy. the people of rome passed their time by going to the free shows provided by the government of fights to the death between slaves, normal people that wanted to compete ,and animals. Also toward the end of rome's decline the government experienced inflation so the roman coins were not used anymore. |
Compare and Contrast
The two city states turned empire economies and trade are very different. Roman trading mostly happened inside of the roman empire whereas the greek trade came from far away land and was essential to the land because of the many mountains I talked about in the geography portion of this website. In the greek economy it was very different from the roman empire because in greece since their was so many governments there was many different types of coins whereas in rome there was one kind of coin.
