Greek Government
There was not much overall government in greece because the islands separated the people and made them forget that they were one county. This lead to fights between the city states and little collaboration between the country. The different city-states had different currency, different procedures, and different types of rulers. The city states did join up for other things like when they fought persia. The people didn't call themselves one county, the people would call themselves a Spartan for example, not a Greek. The 3 Greek and sometimes roman types of government were used at varying points in time by different places. There was a single person called a tyrant that took power by force and had the support of the middle class. There was a small group of people that ruled. An example of this type of government is sparta. The retired spartan soldiers would join the council of elders. The last type of government is ruled by many, such as Athens whose citizens voted on the issues and joined a jury when it was required of them. The greeks Again had a single ruler when they get united by Philp. |
Roman Government
The romans had a few different types of government over the many years. First the etruscans held power and ruled with one king. The romans didn't like that and promised that they would never have one sole king again. The people overthrew the Etruscans but kept many of their practices like some of the gods, the alphabet, and the traditional garb of the romans, the toga. The romans kept expanding their territory and developed a form of democracy called a republic which is quite similar to the government system we have in the US. In a republic people vote for leaders who represent the citizens in government. The roman republic had a few different sections to it. The Roman government had the senate, made up of 300 wealthy people who voted on laws and made new laws too. Next the romans had two rulers named the consuls that were the main rulers and both of them had to agree to create a law. They would determine the romans stance on different things, such as attacking or treating with an other country. In order for the consuls to not get too attached to power they would serve for 1 year. The romans were thinking of war when they set up their government and determined that in war a dictator could rule with sole power but for only 6 months. The next power was praetors who were lined up as the next consuls as well as served as judges for court cases. Because the rich people ran the city and were they only ones allowed on the senate, they tended to make laws in their favor. When the poor people thought that was unfair and therathand to quit the army, the government gave in and added tribunes that spoke for the poor people of Rome and could veto laws that didn't help the lesser people. The roman republic was held together for a long time until officials did not respect the authority of the other government workers and it fell apart. After the roman republic ended the city was in disarray for many years before a strong leader came along and the people of rome liked him so much that they gave him total control over romes land. which meant rome changed from a republic into an empire. |
Compare and Contrast
