Greek MIlitary
The military of greece was strong in some cities and weak in others. The way the military grew in greece was in different ways than some of the other city-states. For example when the aristocracy ruled most of the city states in greece the armies were well equipped because the leaders could afford to pay for nice and expensive weapons. As the city developed and got richer the working class that, as explained before traded and became richer. These people weren't as rich as the leader but they could each use their own weapons and armour. Also the working class had bigger numbers than the rich leader who probably had less people. Later when Philip united the landes the army grew with the land that the empire conquered. |
Rome military
In Rome a very important part of how they lived was based off the military. Rome wouldn’t have grown and flourished the way it did with the army to protect it. Once you were in the army there were opportunities to move up and gain higher praise back home. Being in the army was hard your troop would walk many miles a day and each person would have to carry all of their heavy armor. The army did have an easy way finding where to go because the saying “All roads lead to Rome” is true. The roman had to serve for a certain amount of time before they would be realized into the world. Being in the roman army as tough work because they were often out conquering lands or defending the current ones so if their families live in Rome they were not able to see each other for a long time. But if the soldier did end up surviving the government gave him money or land to live on. A soldier had great pride to serve in the army and the prize was just and extra help. But later on when the empire was shrinking the rulers changed to having a mercenary army. They did this because when the empire got too big the army couldn’t cover it all then the empire starts to shrink and government money becomes more and more rare so they have to decrease giving the soldiers land and money and the people wouldn’t do it for pride because the empire of Rome was failing and they didn’t want to be part of the cause. So the rulers stole some of the government’s money and used it to buy soldiers to defend them, this lead to the downfall of Rome. |
Compare and Contrast
The two armies are alike and different; the Greek armies are a combination of armies and separate at times. When the armies were fighting other empires such as Persia they all joined forces and fought together but when they were fighting each other they used their own armies. Rome had many different small armies and they were each lead by a designated leader and spread out. Most of the people in the army were from Rome because of the amount of people it had living in its walls.
